Mengo Hospital Eye Complex Launch

– The new
Mengo Hospital Eye Complex
, a project funded in part by the
Christian Blind Mission (CBM)
, was officially opened amidst celebration and commendation. The event was graced by notable dignitaries, including the
Archbishop of Uganda, Rev. Stephen Kaziimba
, and the
Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa
.
The
UGX 20 billion
facility, which has the capacity to serve up to
560,000 patients annually
, is set to revolutionize eye care in the region. The expansion increases the hospital’s operational space to approximately
4,280 square meters
, and includes
four state-of-the-art operating theatres
and a
groundbreaking eye bank
, aimed at improving the availability of tissue for eye transplants.
With its new
Cornea Bank
, Mengo Hospital has signaled a strong commitment to addressing the shortage of corneal tissue for transplants and to ensuring timely treatment for the region’s growing number of eye patients, particularly those affected by cataracts.
Dr. Lisbon Aliraki
, ophthalmologist, project manager, and head of the eye department at Mengo Hospital, expressed great enthusiasm for this milestone, stating:
“With the capacity to perform more cataract surgeries and introduce more than 20 new procedures, we will drastically improve our care.”
In line with Mengo Hospital’s dedication to medical education, the Eye Complex will also serve as a
training ground for future ophthalmologists and eye care specialists
, helping to build local expertise and capacity.
The impact of the new facility is already evident. Mengo Hospital has increased from treating just
5 patients per day
to over
300 outpatients daily
, and is now able to perform
5,000 surgeries annually
.
As a key partner in this achievement,
