Major
What do you find at the intersection of mathematics, computer science, and statistics? Answers.
Data is everywhere. (You’re creating even more of it right this second.) Which only makes it more challenging to make sense of it.
At Knox, you’ll develop the computational expertise to perform sophisticated analyses of complex data sets, transforming raw numbers into actionable information. You’ll also develop a deep understanding of the social, economic, political, and cultural implications of what you learn—as well as exploring the ethical issues behind the widespread collection of data and how it can be used.
Major in Data Science
A data science major is an excellent complement to a business, computer science, or economics degree. It’s also the gateway to a growing number of career options.
Course Spotlight
This is a challenging and deeply interdisciplinary program. You’ll need a strong understanding of calculus, statistical modeling, programming, and algorithmic structure—but once you master the tools, you can explore questions in any discipline, from healthcare to sports management.
MATH 225 Linear Models and Statistical Software
STAT 312 Data Mining & Statistical Computing
STAT 323 Machine Learning
CS 220 Applied Data Structures
CS 317 Artificial Intelligence
Where People & Numbers Meet
If you're interested in mathematics, computer science, and statistics AND in tune with ethical issues and fields of application, data science is a perfect match. We address human impacts as well as numbers. Problems in data science also require different modes of thinking to solve. What could be a better use of the liberal arts than that!
Researching Artificial Intelligence at Knox
AI is transforming the way data scientists work with raw data. You can start using this powerful tool as an undergraduate.

The curriculum focuses on industry-standard tools to ensure you are job-ready. You will primarily learn Python for data manipulation and machine learning, along with SQL for database querying and R for statistical analysis. Opportunities exist to learn to use essential platforms like Git for version control, Tableau and Power BI for data visualization, and cloud platforms (AWS) for deploying models.
