It operates as an umbrella organization for the external government audit community. It is a non-governmental organization with special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations.

From 16 to 20 March 2026, INTOSAI's financial statements for the year 2025 were audited at the headquarters of the INTOSAI General Secretariat in Vienna, Austria.
