Driving Rehabilitation
Driving is an instrumental activity of daily living that helps you access your community and maintain independence. Our clinical pre-driving program assesses your ability and teaches the skills needed to resume driving and participate in an on-road assessment. Driving simulation benefits individuals impacted by stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, orthopedic conditions, injuries and more. We also specialize in pre-driving skills for adolescents and adults with Autism, ADHD, and other intellectual and developmental disabilities.
How We Treat
Our occupational therapists assess your cognitive, visual, and physical capabilities for driving performance. We work with you to improve your ability to drive in a range of driving conditions while following rules of the road. Our goal is to help you maximize your function and gain skills to build or regain driving independence.
Evaluation and Training
Our occupational therapists provide a comprehensive assessment to determine driving readiness. A variety of tools are used to assess vision and visual perception, memory and cognitive ability, judgment, rule comprehension, physical strength and motor coordination, sensation and reaction time.
DriveSafety™ Driving Simulator
The DriveSafety™ driving simulator, currently only available at Hospital for Special Care, is a fully-immersive real-life tool that prepares you for community driving. You’ll receive an individualized simulator experience fit for your specific needs. We also help find and recommend the right adaptive tools to help you drive safely.
Clearance to Drive
Your occupational therapist helps you develop a foundation of skills to get your ready for on-the-road-driving. These skills help prepare you to successfully complete the Department of Motor Vehicles Adaptive Driver Assessment, or other similar driver assessments.
Referral
An occupational therapy referral from a physician is needed to make an appointment. The referral should include “community mobility”.
