The museum houses an extensive collection of fossils, rocks, minerals and even meteorites
for visitors to learn more about geology throughout Wyoming and beyond!
Wyoming-centric Exhibits!
The Geological Museum is a “can’t miss” stop on UW’s campus. Greeting you outside
the museum you’ll find our historic copper T-rex sculpture. This life sized statue
is a favorite of many UW students, not just because of his stature, but also because
legend has it that if you throw a spruce tree cone into its mouth during finals week,
you are sure to get an A on your exams!
While the museum highlights different aspects of earth science from all across the
globe, it really excels in showcasing Wyoming-centric fossils and discoveries—just
like our fan-favorite: Big Al! Al is a proud Wyomingite and we are still discovering
new facts about this amazing creature’s time on Earth! And while the 75-foot Apatosaurus
display is impressive, that’s just the start! Visit to check out all of our exhibits
to explore rocks and fossils spanning history.
About the UW Geological Museum
The University of Wyoming Geological Museum is a vibrant hub of learning and discovery
that brings Wyoming’s prehistoric past to life! Since its founding in 1887, the museum
has showcased a world-class collection of fossils—including over 60,000 specimens
and 50 holotypes—while supporting cutting-edge research and education. From towering
dinosaurs to early mammals, these treasures help students, faculty, and the public
explore the wonders of Earth's history. Nearly 20,000 visitors each year—including
K–12 students, international tourists, and curious locals—enjoy dynamic exhibits,
outreach events, and behind-the-scenes collections guided by passionate scientists.
It’s a place where geology rocks—literally!
