For more than 125 years, the generosity of our community has helped ensure that the educational experience on the Hilltop is exceptional. Gifts of any amount are welcome and help to sustain and strengthen our School.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are contributions to the Hackley Fund important? Doesn’t tuition cover the cost of my child’s education?
While tuition covers a portion of the School’s operating costs, there is still a gap between what is collected and the actual expenses. At Hackley, tuition, fees and endowment income cover approximately 84% of our annual operating costs. Most independent schools seek to limit tuition costs and bridge the resulting budget gap with philanthropy. Hackley’s gap, after tuition dollars and endowment income are accounted for, is $8,161 in FY 2025.
Why don’t you raise tuition to cover the full cost of educating each child?
By keeping tuition costs lower and seeking philanthropic support, we make Hackley accessible to a wider range of families. Plus, charitable donations are tax-deductible, unlike tuition payments.
How much should I give?
Every gift makes an impact, regardless of size. Hackley Fund gifts range from $5 to $50,000+, and we encourage you to give what feels right for your family. What matters most is your participation — every gift, no matter the amount, counts.
Why does my participation matter?
Your participation reflects your confidence in Hackley’s mission and shows our community’s commitment. Higher participation rates are important for both alumni perception and our financial health. Annual gifts provide over 7% of our operating budget, helping Hackley maintain its strength.
Should I make a gift to the Hackley Fund every year?
Yes! We ask all members of our community to participate every year, as the Hackley Fund provides essential support for our operating costs. If you’d like to make a lasting impact with less effort, consider setting up a recurring gift. Recurring gifts allow you to spread your donation over time and provide consistent support for Hackley each year.
Who should give to the Hackley Fund?
In the spirit of “
United, we help one another,
” we invite every member of our community to contribute: parents, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty and staff.
If I have multiple kids at Hackley, do I have to make a gift for each child to the Hackley Fund?
No! A single gift from your family counts for participation across all your children. So, if you have a child in tenth grade and eighth grade, your gift would count for participation in each grade.
Are gifts to Hackley tax deductible?
Yes, Hackley is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so gifts are fully tax-deductible. Additionally, gifts of appreciated stock may offer additional tax benefits. You will receive an acknowledgment and receipt for tax purposes.
Can I give to Hackley’s endowment?
Yes, you can make a lasting impact by supporting Hackley’s endowment, which provides resources for future generations. Endowment gifts are invested in perpetuity, with a portion of the income spent annually to support Hackley’s programs. If you would like to learn more about making an endowment gift, we would welcome a conversation with you. We ask those supporting the endowment to continue giving to the Hackley Fund as well, due to its critical importance to the School.
