Detroit ID Card and Voting
Detroit ID cannot be used for voting
Obtaining a Detroit ID Card does not mean that a person is registered to vote and possessing a Detroit ID Card does not make someone eligible to vote. To register to vote in Michigan, a person must:
Be a Michigan resident
Be a United States citizen
Be 17½ years old and be 18 by Election Day to vote, and
Not currently be serving a sentence in jail or prison.
Detroiters can register to vote – up to 15 days before the election – online, by mail, or in person. Within 14 days of an election, Detroiters must register to vote in person at the City Clerk’s Office or at a Detroit Early Vote Center. In Michigan, and in every state, only U.S. citizens are eligible to register to vote or cast a ballot in any state or federal election.
The Detroit Department of Elections is responsible for making sure that every resident in Detroit has the opportunity to register to vote and to exercise their right at their designated polling location. We are committed to ensuring that elections in the City of Detroit are conducted fairly, efficiently, and lawfully.
