Integrate Your Faith With Your Practice
Western Seminary's MA in Counseling prepares counselors to care for the whole person in the populations they serve. Our accredited program offers skill-based coursework, internship experience, as well as a requirement to complete your own personal counseling. Since this program is offered at a seminary, it offers an integrative approach to counseling that seeks to understand counseling issues from both a psychological and Christian point of view.
Study in Portland
Our Portland counseling program is
CACREP
accredited, allowing you flexibility to obtain licensure in many other states with minimal additional work.
Western Seminary's historic campus sits on a
five-acre site
in Southeast Portland and also hosts
A New Day Counseling Center
, which serves as a professional counseling center and a clinical training site.
Portland Program
Study in San Jose
Our California counseling program is located at
Westgate Church South Hills Campus
in San Jose.
The program satisfies the requirements to apply with the Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) to register as an Associate Professional Clinical Counselor and later sit for the exam to become a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC).
San Jose Program
Study Online
Western is offering an online pathway cohort beginning in summer 2025. These cohorts will meet for three years and journey through the same classes together. Students will complete eight credits per semester, mostly via web conference. Each summer, students will be required to complete a one-week residency on our Portland campus.

What Sets Our MA in Counseling Apart?
Accredited
Our
Portland
and
Online
programs are CACREP-accredited, which holds member schools to the most rigorous standards of counseling curriculum. Our
San Jose
program is approved by the Board of Behaviorial Sciences.
Integrated
Integrate your faith with your practice. Our counseling degree unites biblical and theological studies in order to connect your Christian worldview and compassion to the counseling profession.
Practical
Get hands-on, practical training with four semester of supervised internship. Apply what you're learning in the classroom almost immediately by serving clients as early as your second semester.
As a counselor, we sit with people in their brokenness. People who desire to see changes in their lives. Knowing that there is a God who never changes, whose promises will remain faithful, equips me to sit with people in an ever changing world.
