Humanity’s long-standing struggle against darkness throughout history has left behind numerous lighting devices, many of which are featured in this exhibition. As we explore these objects from past eras, we see that they are not merely products of necessity but also reflect the cultural and technological characteristics of their time.
This journey from the open lamps of the Bronze Age to the richly decorated examples of Ancient Greece and Rome, from the multi-branched polycandilion that illuminated Byzantine churches to the glazed lamps of the Islamic Period, reflects not only the history of lighting but also the beliefs, traditions, and aesthetic sensibilities of past societies.
Darkness has long symbolized the unknown, mysterious, and evil, while light has represented clarity, transparency, and a sense of security. For this reason, throughout human history, lighting devices such as torches, lamps, and candles have held significance not only for their practical functions but also for their symbolic meanings.
Organized as part of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Türkiye’s project “102 Exhibitions in the 102nd Year: A Journey Through Anatolia’s Cultural Heritage in the Light of the Republic” the exhibition brings together 64 artifacts on loan from the Istanbul Archaeological Museums and selected pieces from the museum’s collection.
The exhibition “In the Light of the Past: A Chronology of Illumination” invites visitors to explore the enduring relationship between humanity and light throughout history. This exhibition, which tells the unique story of light, offers the opportunity to closely examine the illumination tools and embark on a new journey into the cultural heritage of Anatolia and the Mediterranean world.
