Cleaner air is not just a good idea, it’s the law. MTC’s investments and policies advance projects and programs that protect our environment.

State law requires the Bay Area to cut per capita carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from cars and light trucks through coordinated transportation and land use planning. By the year 2035, the region must reduce emissions by 19% compared to 2005 levels.
The following programs help support our climate goals:
Active Transportation Program
Taps state and federal funds to support programs that make walking and biking better travel options for Bay Area residents.
Climate Initiatives
MTC's climate initiatives programs help the Bay Area meet emissions-reduction targets set by state law.
Regional Active Transportation Plan
Guides investments in infrastructure and regional policy development and implementation.
Safe Routes to School
Builds safer routes for walking or biking to school, with training and education for students on safe travel behaviors, and encouragement and information for families.
Plan Strategies Chart Course to Exceed State Targets
The region's long-range plan for transportation, housing, the environment and the economy is called
Plan Bay Area 2050+.
It includes an ambitious Climate Initiatives Program to help our region reduce per capita CO2 emissions by 20%.
