February is Mahina ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i, a time to honor and celebrate the Hawaiian language. It also marks the opening of the exhibition
Toshiko Takaezu: Worlds Within
, a retrospective of a Hawai‘i-born artist who was deeply inspired by the nature and landscapes of the islands.
So to participate in Mahina ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i, HoMA created a self-guided mini tour of six works in
Worlds Within
that are especially inspired by Hawai‘iʻs landscapes.
Titled
E mākaʻikaʻi mai: Toshiko Takaezu me nā hiʻohiʻona o Hawaiʻi nei
(Take a tour: Toshiko Takaezu and the Hawaiian Landscape), the tour’s brochure was translated by Kau‘i Sai-Dudoit and Puakea Nogelmeier of Awaiaulu, founded in 2004 to develop resources and resource people that can bridge Hawaiian knowledge from the past to the present and the future.
The tour brochure is available in the exhibition (Gallery 28) and will take you on a journey throughout the Museum.
In addition, Head of Retail Courtney Hennessey has curated a special selection of Hawaiian language books and games to help you with your ‘Ōlelo skills. Stop by the HoMA Shop for items like Mary Kawena Pukuiʻs Hawaiian Dictionary (a must for every Hawai‘i household),
Hānau Ka Ua: Hawaiian Rain Names
, and Hulo!, the Hawaiian game that offers “hyperactive fun for ages 5 to 95.”
