Burke’s Library is at the heart of the school, both physically and experientially. It offers a robust K-8 program, and supports the independent research and recreational reading needs of the entire community. This includes individual students, families, faculty, and board members.
The light-filled space is filled with tables for collaborative learning, bean bags for lounging, and our collection includes over 40,000 items, including print and electronic books and audiobooks. The collection is physically divided between the Lower and Upper School libraries.

The mission of the Burke’s Library is to fulfill the mission of the school: to educate, encourage, and empower girls so that they thrive as learners, develop a strong sense of self, contribute to community, and fulfill their potential, now and throughout life.

Lower School Library
The Lower School Library curriculum is built around students. Classroom and specialist faculty regularly collaborate to provide students with experiences that resonate with their developmental level, while also piquing their curiosity, and letting students choose the pace and approach of their involvement.
Kindergartners, first, second, and third graders come to the Library once a week for 40 minutes. Fourth graders come to Library once a week for 50 minutes. In addition to scheduled class time, the Lower School Library is open to students select mornings before school and each snack recess.
Upper School Library
The Upper School Library is open for class times as well as each morning before homeroom, as well as snack recess and lunch.
Fifth- and sixth-grade students participate in a literary appreciation, academic research, and information literacy unit taught by the Upper School Librarian as part of their HEART Health, Emotional Awareness, Responsibility, and Time Management) class. In this unit, students engage with literature to develop a stronger understanding of themselves and others, practice identifying and using relevant academic resources (both print and digital), and learn how to use and create information responsibly.
Seventh- and eighth-grade students visit as needed for class projects, and to continue developing competency in the use of print and digital informational sources. Additional classes are planned collaboratively between the Upper School Librarian and subject teachers.
