What is the NYC Commission on Human Rights? The New York City Commission on Human Rights is the agency that enforces the NYC Human Rights Law – one of the broadest and most protective anti-discrimination laws in the country. The Human Rights Law prohibits discrimination in the areas of housing, employment, and public accommodations, and currently has over 25 different protected categories, including age, gender, religion, disability, race, and national origin. What is the purpose of the survey? The purpose of this survey is to collect quantitative data from New Yorkers to strengthen CCHR's understanding of experiences o discrimination across the city's diverse communities, and solutions Key themes will include: Perceptions of discrimination Willingness to report discrimination Familiarity with the NYC Commission on Human Rights How to resolve underlying causes of bias and and support individuals that experience bias and discrimination What are the goals of the survey? The Commission's goals of the survey include – Improving the Commission's understanding of How New Yorkers perceive and respond to instances of discrimination Places where discrimination is prevalent in NYers daily lives What tools prevent discrimination and support impacted individuals and communities Strengthening the Commission's outreach, accessibility, and visibility efforts. How long will the survey take to complete? The survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. What languages are offered for taking the survey? To maximize participation and ensure inclusivity, the survey will be available in NYC's top ten languages, including Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Bengali, Haitian Creole, Korean, Arabic, Urdu, French, & Polish. How will you measure success for the survey? This survey will be successful by reaching and strongly engaging New Yorkers, regardless of identity, and using New Yorkers' insights to inform the strategic direction of the NYC Commission on Human Rights. Is there an age limit to take the survey? All survey respondents must be aged 14 or older. Will my answers to the survey be confidential? Your individual responses to these questions are confidential. Aggregated responses will only be shared with Commission staff who are working on the agency's strategic planning. Discrimination in Housing, Employment, and Public Spaces The NYC Human Rights Law protects individuals that live in, work in, or visit New York City from discrimination in over 25 protected categories.  No one can be discriminated against based on race, religion, national origin, age, immigration status, disability, or other protected classes under the NYC Human Rights Law. The NYC Commission on Human Rights can hold violators accountable. Discriminatory Harassment Discriminatory harassment is not tolerated in NYC, everyone is protected from it. Discriminatory harassment includes threats, intimidation, harassment, coercion, or violence that interferes with a person’s civil or constitutional rights and is: Motivated in part by that person’s actual or perceived race, creed, color, national origin, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability, citizenship or immigration status, or other protected status; Accompanied by an immediate threat of harm or harm to a person or property; and Perpetrated by an identifiable individual.
