Fourth Graders Use Fraction Skills and Teamwork to Bake a Cake

As part of their math unit on fractions, fourth graders spent time baking a cake! Students were given the recipe for a delicious cake, with the only challenge being that they only had a ¼ measuring cup and a ¼ teaspoon. They worked together to convert the recipe into units of fourths to successfully measure each indifferent with what they had. After completing the conversions and applying the math skills that they had learned, classes combined ingredients, stirred, and baked the cake, ending their day with a delicious treat! This activity took the math concepts and skills students learned in their math groups and applied it to a real-life situation in a fun and engaging way! The result of their correct calculations was a cake that they all ate to celebrate their mastery of math.
