Out
of six academic faculties at Sylhet Agricultural University, the faculty of
Agricultural Economics and Business Studies (AEBS) is a prominent one. It
comprises five departments, namely i) Agricultural Economics and Policy ii)
Rural Sociology and Development iii) Agricultural Statistics iv) Agricultural
Marketing and Business Management and v) Agricultural Finance and Banking. The AEBS
faculty has launched its academic activities at the undergraduate level, offering
a four-year Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics (Honours) degree
since March 3, 2010, in the session 2009–2010
.
To
date, about 415 students have graduated from this faculty.
In addition, each department offers an MS degree with a
specialization in the particular field, and some departments have also started
offering doctoral programs.
The
AEBS faculty provides its academic programs for brilliant students with clear
commitment and devotion to developing knowledge and understanding of the
theoretical concepts that are required in practical circumstances, who can meet
the national and international demand in the arena of agricultural economics
and allied fields. The graduates of this faculty have been serving in various
government organizations (GOs), banks, civil services, research institutes,
universities, colleges, rural development institutes, agricultural extension
departments, non-government organizations (NGOs), and other local and international
development organizations. The need for skilled and trained manpower in the
field of agricultural economics in developing countries like Bangladesh can
hardly be overemphasized. Realizing the complexities in the socioeconomic
setting of rural Bangladesh and technological advancements in the agricultural
sector, particularly in production and processing operations, and to solve the
different agro-economics based research problems, the curriculum for the
faculty’s undergraduate degree program is designed with multidisciplinary
courses in Agricultural Economics and Policy; Agricultural Finance and Banking;
Agricultural Marketing and Business Management; Agricultural Statistics; and
Rural Sociology and Development. Besides, related disciplines, such as Agronomy,
Horticulture, Soil Science, Agricultural Extension, Animal Science, Fisheries,
Agricultural Engineering, Biotechnology, etc. courses also included in the
curricula.
The AEBS faculty has already
carried out several research and development projects that are effective in
enhancing academic, technical, and research performance. The faculty is devoted
to offering the best efforts to promote quality education and research programs,
collaborating with different national and international universities, research
institutions, and other stakeholders. We are committed to continuous
improvement and making the AEBS faculty a center for excellence in the
agricultural economics discipline by creating a world-class academic and
research environment. Scholastic suggestions are highly appreciated in this
regard.
