Our vibrant music program is accessible to all students, regardless of experience, ability level, and interests. Our curriculum provides numerous ways for students to create, perform and experience music through a wide array of opportunities. Students get to play all varieties of musical instruments from around the world such as djembe drums, ukuleles, and steel pans. Starting in 4th grade, we also begin to delve into the world of digital music and music production. Our Music curriculum begins in the Lower Division, where all students are exposed to weekly instruction.
Students will have the opportunity to join the Lower School Chorus and the Marauder Steel (steel drum) ensemble. (Grades 3-5) These groups meet after school once a week, with performances throughout the year.
Students in middle and upper school will have the opportunity to study the basic elements of dance technique and performance, obtaining and expanding upon, the fundamental skills necessary to perform a variety of dance techniques, including ballet, hip-hop, jazz, contemporary, and lyrical. We offer dance in all three divisions. (K-12) Students can join the Marauder Dance Team, which is a hybrid program with the Athletics Dept. that meets after-school.
Maclay Band students learn playing fundamentals and basic musicianship. As they continue their studies, they refine their individual and ensemble playing skills, and further explore the expressive qualities of musical performance. Students are exposed to a wide variety of musical styles. Band offerings at Maclay include an Introduction to Band class, Middle School Band, and a combined MS & US Concert Band. Students may also opt to play in the Maclay Jazz Ensemble and the Pep Band.

Learning to play a bowed stringed instrument provides an exceptional avenue for challenge and growth. We believe there are clear connections between music education and classroom performance, improved social skills and greater emotional well-being.
Orchestra is offered in all three divisions: Lower School Beginning and Intermediate Strings (grades 3-5) Middle School Introduction to Strings, Middle School Concert Orchestra, Upper School Concert Orchestra. All rehearsals are held during the school day.

The program includes a 6th-grade introductory course and a subsequent elective class for 7th and 8th graders. Students will learn the fundamentals of creating drum beats, chord progressions, melodies, and bass lines, and then synthesize these components into complete loops and pieces of music. Those wishing to continue their music production journey beyond middle school may advance to the Songwriting & Music Production course offered in the Upper School.
