Ambassador Bankole Adeoye
African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security

Bankole Adeoye is a Pan-African career diplomat with experience spanning over 3 decades.
A strong advocate for Africa’s transformation, the Commissioner promotes building synergy across the continent for effective governance, durable peace, security and sustainable development.
Ambassador Adeoye assumed office as the African Union (AU) Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace & Security in March 2021, having been elected at the 34th AU Summit in February 2021.
He had served as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the AU and UNECA and Ambassador to Ethiopia with concurrent accreditation to Djibouti from 2017 to 2020.
With university qualifications in B.A. (Political Science & History - Ife, 1982) and MSc (Political Science - Lagos, 1987), the Commissioner is also a Commonwealth Chevening and British Council Scholar, who obtained a postgraduate Certificate in Diplomatic Studies (Distinction) from the University of Oxford, England in 1991.
While on secondment to the NEPAD Agency from 2007 to 2015, he held the strategic positions of Chief of Staff to the Chief Executive Officer; Director of Corporate Services and Coordinator, Partnerships & External Relations.
As Director in the International Organizations Department of the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja, from 2015-2017, the Commissioner contributed to Nigeria’s multilateral engagements within the UN system on the core issues of Human Rights, Humanitarian, Social, Economic and Financial Matters and Administrative & Budgetary Questions.
Overall, his diplomatic career postings covered Egypt, Brazil, South Africa and Ethiopia.
The Commissioner continues to champion the nexus between peace, security and development effectiveness, from the lens of innovative partnerships. He is an avid proponent of concerted performance actions for the African Peace & Security Architecture (APSA) and the African Governance Architecture (AGA).
Ambassador Bankole Adeoye has contributed to a number of policy papers, studies and landmark diplomatic resolutions in his career. He is a committed exponent of ‘one African voice’  in the global order, premised on African Solutions to African Problems. He is also a generative force for inspiring change in the African continent to actualize the Agenda 2063 - the Africa We Want.
He is married with 2 daughters.
