At the India AI Impact Summit 2026 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) participated in a panel discussion on “AI for Oceans: Data, Models and Governance,” highlighting the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence in advancing ocean science and India’s Blue Economy vision.
The MoES team, led by IMD Director General Dr. Mrityunjaya Mohapatra and Cdr P.K. Srivastava, Scientist G & Adviser (MoES), along with Ambassador of Norway H.E. May-Elin Stener and other distinguished experts and dignitaries, engaged in discussions on leveraging AI for improved ocean observation, forecasting, climate resilience, and sustainable marine resource management.
Dr. M. Mohapatra, Director General, India Meteorological Department (IMD) and 3rd Vice President of WMO held a meeting with Mr. Ryoichi Nomura, Permanent Representative of Japan and Director-General, Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) in JMA HQ, Tokyo on 10th February 2026 to further strengthen cooperation and collaboration between the IMD and JMA. Dr Mohapatra is attending a high level workshop on Public-Private Engagement in Meteorological and hydrological services involving different countries of Asia and Asia -Pacific bring organised by WMO and JMA during 10-13 February 2026.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has won the Award of Excellence at the Digital Transformation Summit 2026. This prestigious honor recognizes IMD’s ‘Multi-Hazard Early Warning Decision Support System’ for its innovation and excellence in public service delivery.”
