A new dinosaur has joined the Geology Gallery at the Museum of Northern Arizona. A life-size skeletal model of Scutellosaurus lawleri—one of the earliest known armored dinosaurs—is now on display beside the museum’s Dilophosaurus wetherilli. Both species lived in northern Arizona about 200 million years ago during the Early Jurassic period. Small but well protected, Scutellosaurus had rows of bony plates along its back—earning it the name “little-shielded lizard.”

The Museum of Northern Arizona sits at the base of the San Francisco Peaks, on homelands sacred to Native Americans throughout the region. We honor their past, present, and future generations, who have lived here for millennia and will forever call this place home.
