Art has the role in education of helping children become like themselves instead of more like everyone else
– sydney gurewitz clemens
The Arts are one of the core subjects at OIS for each and every child. We believe that it is through The Arts that children can express themselves in the best way possible. When taught at a young age, The Arts stimulate imagination, broadens horizons, builds critical thinking and enhances the creative mind. Learning through and about the arts enriches the experience of studying while at school as well as preparing students for life after school, and we fully embody this at OIS.
Throughout PYP, MYP and DP programmes, students are encouraged to push their creative boundaries and to challenge their abilities. They showcase their work, through exhibitions and in school performances. This encourages the students to have experiences of presentation, production and event organisation to prepare them for their careers in the future.
VISUAL ARTS
THEATRE
MUSIC
In Visual Arts, our Units of work are designed to allow the students to build on their individual talents and interests. They explore multi-faceted media from painting, to sculpture, to ceramics and assemblage. Creativity is at the heart of what we do at OIS and students are encouraged to constantly step out of their comfort zones.
In Theatre, students are introduced to numerous facets of Theatre (Drama) from the art of stage acting, to film and videography. In class, students explore themselves as directors, actors, designers and playwrights. They have exposure to various theatre forms and genres including puppetry, mask work, community outreach and Theatre in Education. We have a strong International Artists in residence and extra-curricular programme, in which students explore the wider world from different perspectives.
In Music, students have the opportunity to develop and explore their musical skills by investigating various musical cultures, histories, techniques and evolutionary changes. At OIS, we use numerous digital technologies for composition, where the students inquire into contemporary music production. They also learn composition and performance skills, by creating their own music individually and collaboratively.
