Department of Performing Arts
Assam University, Silchar established the Department of Performing Arts in the year 2017 under Abanindranath Tagore School of Creative Arts and Communication Studies to nurture and promote the heritage and contemporary culture of India with a special focus on the North-East. The Department is offering Bachelor of Performing Arts, Master of Performing Arts and Ph.D programme in the following discipline 1. Hindustani Classical Music (Vocal), 2. Drama/Theatre, 3. Manipuri Dance, and 4. Instrumental Music (Tabla). In less than Five years, with collaborative efforts, the Department of Performing Arts has expanded its reach beyond the state of Assam and now has a good number of students from different parts of India. Under the patronage of the University administration and the guidance of the faculty members, the students dream to excel in their life and career as trained professionals in traditional and creative art forms. After completing the BPA and MPA programme in the Department, the students have the promise of good employment opportunities and bright prospects as successful academicians, scholars, artists, performers, researchers, and entrepreneurs at the National and International levels. Our students are getting opportunities for higher studies in the top-ranked universities of India. Our courses aim at providing exposure and open up the vista of studying and practicing Performing arts in line with the interdisciplinary approaches focused on NEP 2020. The course components of the programme are designed to assist the students to grow as scholars, music performers, performing arts pedagogues, or other performing arts professionals through a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical know-how.
