About the Founder of Bedford County
Bedford County was founded in 1754. It was named after John Russell who became the 4th Duke of Bedford, England in the 1730s. He was apart of the Whig party and a prominent statesman and nobleman. At the time of Bedford County's founding John Russell was serving as Secretary of State to Great Britain. The colonists would name new counties after British influential figures as a way to honor them.
