Lynnette Jackson Crenshaw '93
Field Hockey and Basketball/Gator SuperFan
Lynnette Jackson Crenshaw’s athletic career at Laurel was marked by dedication, resilience, and a love for competition that continues to define her today. As a student-athlete, she spent three years as the goalie on the varsity field hockey team and two years on the varsity basketball team, contributing her energy and leadership to both programs. She points to a standout moment Sophomore year when the field hockey team earned the remarkable opportunity to compete in the state semi-final game. The 1990 state semi-final banner that hangs in the Tippit Gym serves as a reminder of that team’s hard work, talent, grit and commitment.
Her talent, determination and leadership did not go unnoticed. She co-captained the field hockey team and was honored with the 1991 and 1992 All–Northeast Ohio Field Hockey First Team award, celebrating her as one of the top players in the region. She also was awarded the title of Most Valuable Defensive Player.
Jami Morris '21
2018 and 2020 Ohio High School Athletic Association State Golf Champion
Jami Morris’ athletic achievements speak for themselves. She led the team to four state tournaments, personally winning two of them, and she set multiple program records. Jami stepped onto the golf team as a new to Laurel Ninth Grader along with Taylor ’21 and Haley ’21 Thierry, forming a trio of first-year players who surprised everyone by taking Laurel all the way to the state tournament in just their first year.
Looking to recapture her Sophomore year title at her Senior-year state championship, during COVID and while navigating the toughest stretch of her life, Jami walked onto The Ohio State University Golf Club’s Gray Course carrying far more than just her clubs. Her mother was in the middle of lymphoma treatment, and her family had been juggling hospital visits, school, practice, and the college recruitment process. Despite this, Jami played with purpose that day, and when she made her final birdie putt, she looked up and saw her mom standing there, cheering her on, along with the rest of her family, who had supported her through the hardest year imaginable.
Taylor Thierry '21
WNBA Player, Atlanta Dream
#5 Taylor Thierry’s Laurel basketball career was extraordinary, despite her Senior season being cut short by COVID. As a new Ninth Grader she and her twin sister, Haley, played varsity basketball as well as golf. After playing golf in the state tournament along with fellow Ninth Grader Jami Morris, Taylor chose to focus on basketball for the remainder of her Laurel athletic career. By Junior year she was averaging 17 points and 8 rebounds per game, impacting every possession, scoring, defending, rebounding, and exhibiting the leadership skills that turn good teams into great ones. She helped lead Laurel basketball to its first-ever state tournament appearance—a historic moment that changed the trajectory of Laurel’s basketball program and which continued to be felt by the teams that followed her. Taylor made the same impact at The Ohio State University becoming one of those rare players whose value goes far beyond the box score by doing the hard, unglamorous work: perfect defensive rotations, extra rebounds, hustle plays that changed the momentum in the Big Ten. She led Ohio State in rebounds and steals and became one of the most efficient players in the country, shooting over 60 percent from the field. That level of consistency comes from preparation, discipline, and tireless effort.
In the spring of 2025 Taylor was drafted by the Atlanta Dream—the first Laurel alum to enter the WNBA. To put that in perspective, there are more than 600,000 high school basketball players in the US and only about 1.2 percent go on to play in college. From that group, only 36 players are drafted into the WNBA each year. Taylor’s journey from Laurel to Ohio State to the WNBA embodies everything the Hall of Fame represents: discipline, humility, leadership, and excellence.
