The majority of Aberdeenshire Council Museums Service's collection of Banff silver is on display at Banff Museum. A silver bullet teapot, possibly made by George Leith on a visit to Banff in 1700, is an exceptionally fine piece of Scottish provincial silver. The town’s recent revival of silversmithing has sparked a resurgence of interest in Banff silver.
Banff Museum was founded in 1828 as the 'Museum of the Banff Institution' and is the oldest museum in Scotland, north of Perth. When the Banff Institution dissolved in 1875, the collections passed to Banff Town Council and then subsequently to Aberdeenshire Council.
The present museum and library building were built in 1902. Banff Preservation and Heritage Society
currently run this museum
in partnership with Aberdeenshire Council Museums Service.
The museum is in the same building as the library, and after a major refurbishment there is now a lift giving access to the museum on the first floor.
