Our multidisciplinary pulmonary medicine team has the knowledge and experience to treat respiratory conditions, lung cancer, interstitial lung disease and sleep-disordered breathing with a wide variety of techniques. Lung Conditions One of the most common chronic respiratory conditions, asthma causes difficulty breathing due to inflammation and constriction of the airways. Generally associated with cigarette smoking, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive inflammatory lung disease. Describes a large group of disorders characterized by inflammation and scarring. The scarring, called pulmonary fibrosis, leads to permanent loss of your lung tissue’s ability to carry oxygen. Once lung scarring occurs, it is generally irreversible. However, treatment may help slow the damage. Lung cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer in males and females combined and it is the #1 leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. The healthcare professionals at the Summa Health Cancer Institute combine the latest technology with a comprehensive course of lung cancer screening and treatment options. A harmful blockage in an artery of the lungs caused by a blood clot. A PE can be a scary and life-threatening condition that requires urgent medical attention. Pulmonary hypertension happens when the pressure in the blood vessels leading from the heart to the lungs is too high. Respiratory failure is the inability of the respiratory system to adequately supply fresh oxygen or remove carbon dioxide. Chronic cardiopulmonary disorders such as COPD, severe asthma and heart failure are frequently associated with sleep-related abnormalities. Therefore, the Summa Health pulmonary team often works hand in hand with our sleep medicine specialists in the diagnosis and treatment of people with breathing-related sleep issues.
