Beneath the Yorkshire village of Aldborough lies Isurium Brigantum, capital of the Romanised Brigantes, the biggest tribal confederation in Roman Britain. Excavations have shown that in Roman times, Isurium had a prosperous population living in considerable luxury.
Remains of Aldborough Roman Town’s defences are laid out in a lovely Victorian arboretum garden with gorgeous trees, including towering conifers.
You can see two fine mosaic floors inside period buildings, and the museum houses an outstanding collection of Roman finds, including important recent discoveries.
You’re welcome to enjoy Aldborough Roman Site at your own pace on a self‑led visit, wandering through the peaceful grounds and discovering its history as you go. Or, for a deeper insight, why not join one of our fantastic volunteer guides for a tour and uncover the fascinating stories that bring this ancient site to life?
If you wish to book onto a guided tour please follow the link to book. If you would like to enter the site without a guided tour, please arrive at any time during our opening hours, no booking is required.
