The program consists of a mixture of classroom, simulation, and experiential training. The program is a 400-hour block (35 hours weekly for 14 weeks), with multiple sessions annually. Please see the academic calendar for upcoming session dates. The student schedule is a variation of the hours of 8:00AM to 5:00PM. Schedule calendars are distributed at the beginning of each program session. The program is jointly accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). NYU Langone Health Pharmacy Technician Training Program graduates consistently score above the national average (82 percent versus 71 percent) on the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) , the requisite exam to pharmacy technician employment. Pharmacy Technicians: Integral Members of the Healthcare Team At NYU Langone, pharmacy technicians work under the immediate supervision of a registered pharmacist and operate pharmacy technology, such as robotics and automated dispensing devices, to fill medication orders. They also order and receive shipments, stock medications, deliver patient-specific medications, process-controlled substance requisitions for pharmacist review, and work on medication units with a pharmacist and nursing staff to quickly handle all pharmacy-related patient care needs. A career as a pharmacy technician is rewarding and has many benefits, including competitive compensation. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics anticipates “faster than average” employment growth for pharmacy technicians, growing more than 7 percent from 2018 to 2028. Formal education, work experience, and national certification can all help pharmacy technicians grow professionally and increase long-term earning potential. The U.S. national median annual wage for pharmacy technicians is $36,740, the New York State median annual wage is $38,920, and the New York City–Newark–Jersey City metropolitan area median annual wage is $37,660 (source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook , May 2021).
