The Rx for Science Literacy Workshop At-a-Glance
The
Rx for Science Literacy
workshop is an initiative of the North Carolina Association for Biomedical Research (NCABR) and implemented with support from local research organizations and universities. Starting in 1994, it has helped more than 5,000 educators from 97 North Carolina counties gain exposure to the perpetually advancing biotechnologies and current scientific development. In January 1995, NIEHS joined this effort by providing funding, facility, designing and implementing two full-day workshops per year, while NCABR would recruit workshop participants on a first-come and first-served basis and handle other administrative issues. Thus far 50
Rx for Science Literacy
workshops have been conducted at NIEHS with more than 1,000 total attendees.
Each
Rx for Science Literacy
workshop at NIEHS is designed with a theme that is chosen either from the NIH Curriculum Supplement series or other scientific issues that require public attention. The most current and relevant research findings in that area are disseminated to workshop participants. Examples are "Human Genetic Variation;" "Chemicals, the Environment and You;" "Cell Biology and Cancer;" and "The What, Where, How, and Why of Health Science Research." At each workshop, participants tour the research facility, hear from scientists about their latest research advances, and take home a free curriculum and other bioscience education materials. The NIEHS
Rx for Science Literacy
workshops are usually offered in spring, either in-person at the NIEHS campus or virtual. Educators who are interested in attending this workshop should reserve a spot via the
Rx for Science Literacy
webpage when registration is available.
