B&FC Power Skills Awards: Supporting Smarter Graduate Recruitment
The B&FC Power Skills Awards are designed to help employers identify candidates who are genuinely work ready, not just academically qualified. The awards recognise the development of key employability skills – often referred to as “power skills” – such as communication, teamwork, problem solving, self management and resilience, which employers consistently identify as critical for success in the workplace.
Available at Silver and Gold levels, the awards require students to evidence how they have developed these skills through real world activity beyond their academic course. This includes experiences such as part time work, volunteering, leadership roles, community engagement and project based activity. For the Gold Award, students must also critically reflect on their learning, demonstrating self awareness and the ability to articulate their strengths clearly and confidently.
For employers, the Power Skills Awards add value to recruitment by providing verified evidence of transferable skills that are often difficult to assess through CVs or qualifications alone. Award holders have already practised articulating their skills using competency based approaches, supporting stronger interview performance and more meaningful conversations during selection processes.
The Gold Award is formally recognised on a student’s Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR), offering additional assurance of skill development alongside academic results. This enables employers to more easily identify candidates who combine technical knowledge with the behaviours, attitudes and adaptability required to perform effectively from day one.
