History Of The Museum
The museum of Santal Culture at Bishnubati is one of the cultural units of our school ‘Rolf Schoembs Vidyashram’, a non-formal Santal School. The school provides education to rural Santal children through their mother tongue Santali, and gradually switches on to the state languages Bangla, English, and so on.
The theoretical knowledge alone however, cannot give the Santal students a complete understanding of the rich cultural heritage of their community. Therefore, we have motivated the community to put up a community museum. After agreeing with the idea of putting up the museum, the villagers took part in making the museum. The men covered the roof with straw. The youth did the interior decoration and the women plastered the walls and leveled the floor of the house with mud mixed with cow dung, as they do it for their own houses. While constructing the house, one member of each family gave free labour; only food was provided to them. After putting up the building, the men, women and even the students donated numerous items for the museum. Now, the museum has got its definite shape, and the senior students of the village who stay in the campus, take care of the museum. In this way the museum has become the museum of the community.
The museum was inaugurated in 2007 by Prof. Rajat Kanta Roy, former Vice-chancellor of Visva-Bharati University, and Mrs. Shila Poddar Kundu from the Indian Museum was the special guest of the inaugural programme.
We are grateful to many people who helped us bring the Museum into reality, some of them are-  Dr. Pratap Chandra Chanda, former education minister of India; Prof. Ranjit Kr. Bhattacharya, former director, Anthropological Survey of India; Prof. Kumkum Bhattacharya; Dr. Martin Kaempchen; Snehadri Sekhar Chakraborty; Probhat Bagdi, Barhan Hansda, Samiran Nandy, Sona Murmu and Gokul Hansda.
Ghosaldanga Bishnubati Adibasi Trust is the financial and technical supporter of the museum.

Message from Director’s Desk
The Adivasi heritage cannot be fully realized merely through acquiring formal education, nor can it be realized by someone who grows up in his cultural milieu throughout his life. The importance of heritage can be realized by taking modern education through adivasi life. In other words, only by de-touring the mainstream world through his adivasi way of life can one value the culture and heritage of his own.
Keeping this issue in mind, Ghosaldanga Bishnubati Adibasi Trust has several development initiatives for the Santals in particular and adivasis in general, the ‘Museum of Santal Culture’ at Bishnubati is one of them. The main purpose of the museum is to use it as a learning center for Santal culture and heritage for the students. The other purpose is to educate the general visitors of the museum about Santal life and their rich cultural heritage. For this purpose the educated youth of the village also have a museum promotion team that visits different schools and institutions with items to disseminate the idea of the museum through song and dance.
People who are interested in learning more about our school initiative, the traditional knowledge of Santals, and about our intangible heritage are welcome to visit our school.
