The ASU elementary student experience
Daily class huddle and content review
We start the day by getting the whole class together for a live video home room session on Zoom. This is designed to build community, foster student friendships, improve social and emotional learning, and share in a mini inquiry lesson to get those thinking caps warmed up.
Sun Devil learning time
Independent learning time from the Playlist, personalized learning time on adaptive software (DreamBox, Reading Plus, Reading Park, etc.), collaborative group projects and live learning in small groups, as scheduled by the teacher.

Attendance Required
Valuable face-to-face learning with teachers, where students can participate in activities like research discussions, math support or science demonstrations. Regular breaks help with movement and refocusing, tailored to each student’s age group. Students stay informed through announcements and show up ready to learn. In K–2, we incorporate mini-lessons to break up the session.

A chance for relaxing, restroom breaks, royal robot battles and giving someone a hug.

Personalized learning for our K–5 students. During this period, students will be grouped based on their academic abilities. Adventure Hour
Held on Tuesdays and is dedicated to each student’s individual interest. Students will rotate every nine weeks through classes like STEM, Art, Chess or Cooking! They can choose their favorite four activities and will have the opportunity to participate in each one as we progress through the year. Note that some Advanced Adventure Hour offerings will be held on Mondays.
Learning Success Coach
Learning Success Coaches (LSCs) support students in each grade level by providing targeted academic progress and motivational support, helping students maintain engagement and strengthen their success in partnership with classroom teachers.

How much live time vs independent time will my student have?
Expect live instruction daily plus Spark Time small groups. Independent Sun Devil Learning Time includes short online tasks and offline reading, writing, making and movement. Check the

Are there any differences between K–5 and 6–12 online learning?
K–5 students start the day on Zoom with their teacher and class for homeroom, huddle, Spark Time and live lessons. After a break, students will spend time in asynchronous lessons called Independent Sun Devil Learning Time with the support of the home educator/parent. Each student will have the opportunity to have some fun time in Adventure Hour or activities with the Learning Success Coach team. Overall, you can expect a more structured schedule with your K–5 student.

What curriculum is used in elementary school?
Strong Mind is the current curriculum for K–5. Students can expect to spend independent learning time engaging with the Strong Mind curriculum. Our teachers go above and beyond to create engaging live lessons that align with Arizona state standards. These lessons blend Strong Mind content, workbook-style activities, hands-on projects and their own creative materials. Additionally, adaptive software programs like Boost, DreamBox and Amira are required for weekly use by students. These programs help teachers and home educators identify students’ strengths and personalize lessons to fit their needs perfectly!

Students need to have a computer with a modern browser and internet access. The following items are suggested for all courses.

How is screen time managed for K–5?
Live sessions are short and interactive. The day includes planned breaks and offline activities to keep young learners focused and fresh.
What subjects are taught in elementary school?
English Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies are the core curriculum. Adventure Hour gives students the opportunity to explore elective activities such as Art, Cooking and STEM.
Are there standardized state tests in elementary school?
Yes, AzM2 is the statewide achievement test for Arizona students. Arizona public school students in grades 3–8 and grade 10 (cohort 2023 in 2020–2021 school year) will take the grade level AzM2 assessments in English Language Arts and Mathematics. Testing dates are in the spring each year. All students are responsible for taking the in-person state standardized tests.

Is kindergarten a full-day program?
Yes, our program has scheduled activities throughout the day. Although we do not offer AM/PM options, online learning allows for a flexible schedule.
How many students are in each class?
In a virtual environment, we personalize the learning to be a class of one. On average, each K–5 teacher is assigned 30 students.
What are the age requirements for kindergarten and first grade?
Kindergarten: Any student enrolling in kindergarten must be five (5) years old on or before Sept 1 in the school year for which you are enrolling.
First grade: Any student enrolling in 1st grade must be six (6) years old on or before Sept 1 in the school year for which you are enrolling.
Does ASU Prep Digital provide support for military families?
Yes! ASU Prep Digital is proud to be an Arizona Purple Star School. We offer dedicated resources, peer-to-peer support and social activities for military-connected students and families to ease transitions and build relationships.

English Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies are the core curriculum. Adventure Hour gives students the opportunity to explore elective activities such as Art, Cooking and STEM.
Are there standardized state tests in elementary school?
Yes, AzM2 is the statewide achievement test for Arizona students. Arizona public school students in grades 3–8 and grade 10 (cohort 2023 in 2020–2021 school year) will take the grade level AzM2 assessments in English Language Arts and Mathematics. Testing dates are in the spring each year. All students are responsible for taking the in-person state standardized tests.

Is kindergarten a full-day program?
Yes, our program has scheduled activities throughout the day. Although we do not offer AM/PM options, online learning allows for a flexible schedule.
How many students are in each class?
In a virtual environment, we personalize the learning to be a class of one. On average, each K–5 teacher is assigned 30 students.
What are the age requirements for kindergarten and first grade?
Kindergarten: Any student enrolling in kindergarten must be five (5) years old on or before Sept 1 in the school year for which you are enrolling.
First grade: Any student enrolling in 1st grade must be six (6) years old on or before Sept 1 in the school year for which you are enrolling.

Yes! ASU Prep Digital is proud to be an Arizona Purple Star School. We offer dedicated resources, peer-to-peer support and social activities for military-connected students and families to ease transitions and build relationships.
