The Peace Party looks at the word “Peace” – The Peace Party Skip to content The Peace Party – Non-Violence Justice, Enviroment The Peace Party – Non-Violence Justice, Enviroment The Peace Party looks at the word “Peace” Peace , unqualified but following the basic understanding, may be thought of as an absence of violence – a time when differences, disputes and conflicts are being resolved without the resort to violence. But that may be partly considered as “negative” – no war: no violence. Positive Peace on the other hand is “the presence of the attitudes, institutions and structures that create and sustain peaceful societies” and follows from the application of the full range of universal human values – at all levels. The Party notes that “Values” are sometimes referred to as “Virtues” or even “Qualities” or “Principles”. We list here just some of those that underlie the notion of Peace: Compassion for others Care for fellow beings Respect for the views, the opinions of others and their ways of life Love of human life may be expressed in so many ways Justice – in striving for the good and right relations between individuals and groups Tolerance of the views of individuals and groups and their culture Unity – the achievement of oneness in decision-making Responsibility – the development of responsibility for the way we behave towards each other Kindness towards one’s “neighbour” (everyone with whom we come into contact Honesty in the handling of the issues in all dealings with others Humility – being humble is considering others and their needs at least as important as oneself and one’s own needs Humanity – being humane in every dealing Trust – feeling sure that you believe someone Fairness – the quality of treating people equally or in a way that is right or reasonable Openness towards each other Courageousness in resolving problems and conflicts “against the odds” Mercy towards others Appreciation of the qualities and skills of others Hope cultivated for the creation of a better future Empathy – seeing ourselves “as others see us” References: The Positive Peace Report 2018 (http://economicsandpeace.org/) outlines a new approach to societal development through the application of Positive Peace and systems thinking.
