Photo credit: The Clery Center The Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act The Clery Act is a federal consumer protection law that requires colleges and universities receiving federal funds to publicly disclose certain institutional policy, procedure, program and crime information that relates to the safety and security of the institution. The purpose of the Clery Act is to ensure that current and prospective students, employees and community members are provided with important information that helps them make informed decisions about their safety. Clery Crimes and Clery Geography Clery statistics reflect a portion of the criminal activity and alleged criminal activity reported to have occurred on, or immediately near the university. An incident needs to meet three standards in order to be disclosed under Clery: Contain necessary elements to qualify as a Clery crime Occur at a qualifying location that SJSU has established ownership or control of Be brought to the direct attention of a Campus Security Authority Campus Security Authorities Campus Security Authority (CSA) is a term specific to the Clery Act that's used to describe individuals that, due to the function of their role associated with SJSU, are required to provide the university with Clery crime information that is brought to their attention directly.
