meet our leadership
To make a new future, we need to know our past.
WashU was founded in 1853 by a group of St. Louisans to address the lack of higher education opportunities in the Midwest. The new university lacked funding from the state, a religious group, or a single wealthy donor, so WashU grew slowly at first. Today, we are proud of our global reputation for excellence in teaching, research, and patient care.
