Honoring the past Advancing the future of Hemispheric Defense & Security
The Inter-American Defense College (IADC) is an educational entity of the
Inter-American Defense Board (IADB)
, and an independent entity of the
Organization of American States (OAS)
. The IADC was formally opened on 9 October 1962 when the Honorable Dean Rusk, then Secretary of State of the United States, presented the building and furnishings donated by the United States Government. Doctor Jose A. Mora, then Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), was the principal speaker at the opening ceremony.

The Inter-American Defense College (IADC) is a unique institution in the Western Hemisphere, featuring a fully international faculty, staff, and student body. This multinational participation provides an exceptional platform
to increase inter-American defense and security cooperation by building mutual understanding and trust.
While there is no tuition for the master’s degree program, sponsoring governments are responsible for their students’ living and travel expenses throughout the year-long course.
As part of the Organization of American States and the Inter-American Defense Board, the IADC strives to maximize representation among member states, demonstrating shared regional responsibility. Currently, 19 member states and one observer nation are represented among the college’s students and staff.
