General Stats
On average, SMU enrolls approximately 6,350 undergraduate and 4,500 graduate and professional students. The first-year class is between 1,525 and 1,550 students.
SMU’s undergraduate minority enrollment averages approximately 28%, with an additional 6% from international countries. About one in every three students on campus comes from a diverse background. SMU thrives on the dialogue and understanding created by this global community.
The SMU undergraduate population is nearly 50/50 male and female. On average, the graduate population is slightly higher in the number of males.
An average of 89% to 90% of SMU students return for their second year.

SMU is known nationally for excellence in preparing graduates for their careers, ranking in the top 7% of colleges with the highest-paid graduates, and the top 19% of Best Colleges Based on Salary potential, according to PayScale’s 2020-21 College Salary Reports. Within six months after graduation, 93% of SMU graduates have jobs or are in graduate school.
The Hegi Family Career Development Center
offers relevant learning opportunities for students to gain skills that position them for professional success. Through these experiences, SMU empowers students and alumni to find their passion and to navigate careers for a lifetime.
SMU is home to
17 NCAA Division I-A teams
in basketball, cross-country, track and field, swimming and diving, golf, soccer, tennis, volleyball, equestrian, crew, and football. SMU also offers several special-interest sports clubs and an extensive
intramural sports program
Approximately 48% of female undergraduates participate in sororities, and about 32% of male undergraduates participate in fraternities. Service-oriented and academically competitive,
Greeks are a positive force on campus
. The Interfraternity Council holds a formal recruitment process each August to September for all students and an informal process for upper class students each Spring.
SMU offers service-learning courses, fall and spring Community Service Days, an Inter-Community Experience (ICE) program,

, as well as many other service opportunities through various campus organizations.
