Strathnaver Museum The following list is the men who died during World War One and honoured on the Melness War Memorial. Please email Eileen Mackay at genealogy@strathnavermuseum.org.uk John Barnetson, Quartermaster Sergeant, Royal Engineers David Campbell, Lance Sergeant, 16th Bn Canadian Expeditionary Force Donald Mackay, Lance Corporal, Lovat Scouts Mackay Mackay, Lieutenant, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry ‘Mac’ Mackay was born to Robert and Janet Mackay of Skinnet, Melness in 1889. The PPCLI was privately raised and enlisted veterans so it could skip basic training and proceed directly to the front. Having previously served in the Lovat Scouts and the Northwest Mounted Police (now the Royal Canadian Mounted Police) Mac enlisted in August 1914 in Ottawa. The PPCLI suffered heavy casaulties at Frezenberg, near Ypres in Spring 1915 where Mac received a head wound that made him ‘unsuitable for further service’. Undertered he received a commission in a non-combat role, becoming a paymaster. By 1918, with a shortage of suitable junior officers, he was resinstated as a PPCLI officer for the great 1918 offensive. Before taking up his new role he returned to Tongue distributing gifts of whisky and chocolate. Tasked with capturing the woods beyond Monchy le Preux Lt Mackay led reinforcements but was wounded. Mac was evacuated but succommed to his wounds at the casualty clearing station on 27 August 1818. He rest in the Ligny St Fochel British Cemetery II-E-18.
