Red spruces and balsamic firs grow in the mountains, and subtropical palmetto and carnivorous lilies (genus Sarracenia ) and venus flycatcher ( Dionaea muscipula ) grow in southern coastal areas. The general fauna of North America, including rabbits, squirrels, raccoons, opossums, deer, and bears and feral cats, live within the state. Since the late 1980s there have been efforts to bring the nearly extinct red wolf back to North Carolina. The most common birds are cardinals, wrens, mockingbirds, tits, and many varieties of woodpeckers and songbirds. Freshwater fish such as bluegills, crappie, bass, and sunfish are common in the interior. Lake trout and rainbow trout are found in the mountains.
