Forests and Woodlands
The BLM manages close to 58 million acres of forest and woodlands across 12 western states and Alaska. These forests provide habitat for wildlife, trails for hiking and biking, clean water for communities, and a variety of wood products, such as timber, firewood and teepee poles.
We manage forests and woodlands in accordance with the multiple-use, sustained yield mandate of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976, which means that everything which forests provide today will also be provided in the future. In other words, the BLM manages forests to meet the present and future needs communities, wildlife and all those who benefit from the services forests provide.
