Music
At Garrison Forest, Music is a vibrant part of campus life. Students develop performance skills and cultivate an appreciation for music through required, elective and extracurricular courses. Most importantly, our Music program promotes creativity and a sense of community.
Students are actively engaged in creating, performing, learning about and sharing music. The curriculum combines choral singing and general music, music theory and music appreciation, and includes music of diverse eras, genres, styles and cultures. The Garrison Forest Music program exposes students to experiences, knowledge, and skills they can use to express themselves musically in meaningful and joyful ways.

Lower School
Preschool
Upper School students may take Modern Band and/or Chamber Choir and audition for Ragged Robins or The Blues Band—select vocal and instrumental groups that perform on and off campus, including at the Fells Point Farmers Market, Walters Art Museum, and a Baltimore Orioles game. Chamber Orchestra meets Friday mornings. Students may also apply to Tri-M, the national music honor society, and engage in leadership and service. Additional opportunities include the annual musical, Music Club, and Orchestra Club.
Middle School music builds on Lower School foundations through required classes that blend theory, history, and performance—culminating in winter and spring concerts. Coursework includes guitar, djembe, handchimes, hip hop, and digital music. Eighth graders may take the Modern Band elective, and all students can audition for Blue Birds Band, the musical, and Blue Belles, our award-winning vocal ensemble. Chamber Orchestra meets Friday mornings, and students may apply to Tri-M for leadership and service opportunities.
Lower School students attend music class twice weekly, exploring musical theory and vocabulary with growing emphasis on singing, tone, and diction. Performances include winter and spring concerts and other events, with music woven into interdisciplinary projects. Afterschool options include Blue Gems (Grades 3–5 chorus), Blue Beats (Grades 4–5 drumline), and Blue Jams (Grades 4–5 band). Private lessons in piano, voice, and violin begin in Kindergarten, with guitar and flute added in Grades 4 and 5.
Preschool children take Music twice a week, and present a musical play in the spring in which all children participate. In addition to the formal Music program, Preschool classroom teachers incorporate song and music into class plays and events.
