Key Stage 3 Curriculum - Cwmtawe Community School Academic Key Stage 3 Curriculum Share This Page Share on Facebook Share on Facebook Share on X Share on X Email this page Key Stage 3 Curriculum Our key stage 3 curriculum is designed to build on pupils’ knowledge, skills and understanding gained throughout primary school. As soon as your child starts with us, we begin the process of preparing them to excel in their GCSE examinations and develop the social and emotional skills to thrive in the world of work. Pupil Grouping On entry in Year 7, pupils are broadly grouped by ability. The structure is designed to give pupils the additional targeted support they need to achieve and move pupils into more challenging groups over the course of key stage 3. Mixed groups Pupils are organised in mixed ability groups. Some pupils will be identified and provided with additional support for literacy and numeracy. Nurture group Pupils are supported in a small group with a high adult to pupil ratio. All pupils are assigned a GCSE target grade in the first term after they start at Cwmtawe. This grade is based on a wide range of data, including national test scores, CAT tests taken early in the autumn term, Suffolk Reading Test and spelling tests. Parents of pupils within groups that are receiving additional literacy and numeracy support are invited to an additional parents evening around Christmas time. This gives you the opportunity to ask questions and see the techniques used in school to support your child. By using similar techniques at home, this can raise achievement and progression. In Year 7, pupils study a wide range of subjects including: Mathematics Science Religion, Values and Ethics Welsh Art Design Technology Drama Geography History ICT French and/or German Music Wellbeing Physical Education and Games Some pupils will also receive additional literacy and numeracy sessions. In Year 8, pupils continue to study a comprehensive range of subjects including: Mathematics Science Religion, Values and Ethics Welsh Art Design Technology Drama Geography History ICT French and/or German Music PSHE Physical Education and Games. Some pupils will also receive additional literacy and numeracy sessions. In March of Year 9 pupils will start the process of choosing their 'options' for GCSE. More detail is available on the Key Stage 4 section of the website Throughout the curriculum, pupils are given opportunities to develop their literacy, numeracy, thinking skills and digital competence skills in a wide range of contexts. They are assessed on these skills in different subjects and given feedback on areas which they may improve on.
