College Guidance - The Gunston School
College Guidance

Throughout this process, students at Gunston will find their voice and clearly articulate their college aspirations, reflecting our educational philosophy. Initially equipped with the tools to thrive in the classroom, students are then encouraged to question information and develop original ideas. True learning happens when they step out of their comfort zones and take risks. Applying this approach to college admissions, students find the college that best matches their cognitive, personal, social, and emotional needs. The College Guidance Office's primary goal is to match students with colleges that foster their development into successful, responsible adults. Regular and honest communication among students, parents, teachers, and the College Counseling Office is essential, with students taking responsibility for the process while receiving support from everyone involved.

Gunston Experience (GEx)
The 9th and 10th grade Gunston Experience curriculum prepares students for College 101 which begins in 11th grade and continues into 12th grade. Students receive a Naviance account, prepare a resume, analyze their PSAT performance, evaluate their social media presence, and practice time management skills. In GEx students reflect on who they are, and how they can choose classes and activities that support their development.
9th & 10th Grade College Evening
Join our College Guidance Department as they walk you through everything Gunston does to prepare you and your student for continuing education after graduation. You’ll be walked through Gunston’s college guidance philosophy, “We place the student at the center, with parents as partners.” This is a Don’t-Miss-Event!
College 101 - 11th Grade
College 101-11 focuses on the questions “Who am I now?” and “How will I use that information to guide my postsecondary plans?” Students learn how to use technology and written materials to assist in their college search, guidelines for communication with admission offices, how to have a productive college visit, and how to build a college list. This class creates the building blocks of students’ college application, including: standardized testing, resume updates, essay brainstorming and writing, 12th grade course selection, and recommendation letters.
College 101 - 12th Grade
College 101-12 builds on the College 101–11 curriculum. Students continue to navigate Naviance to investigate their interests and identify college matches. Students become familiar with college applications and complete them. Classroom discussions surrounding critical topics associated with the college application process include: standardized testing, FERPA, essay prompts, writing quality, resumes, interviews, demonstrated interest, auditions, and athletic recruitment. The students will also understand the cost of a college education.
Personalized Counseling
Personalized Counseling: 11th grade students receive their counselor assignment in December. Families meet with a Director of College Guidance in the second semester to establish a relationship and discuss college plans. Students are encouraged to meet with their counselor often in individual or group meetings. The application search and application process is tailored to the needs of each student, and the Directors spend a great deal of time getting to know and help their students.
College 101 - 11th Grade
Admission Experts Panel: The College Guidance team invites leaders from college admission offices to offer families advice, and demystify the college admission process. These admission experts have years of experience, and use their knowledge and professional careers to provide our community with answers to their questions during this town-hall style program. 11th grade students, parents, and guardians are invited to attend this can’t-miss annual event.
Application Workshop
Application Workshop: All seniors are invited to participate in our annual application workshop. Students create and refine the activities section of the Common Application, practice admission interviews, fine tune their essay, and discuss and write supplemental essays. Students meet with several admission representatives throughout the week, and have an individual appointment with an admission counselor to review their application essay.
11th Grade College Evening
11th Grade College Evening: The 11th grade college evening offers parents and guardians the opportunity to learn in-depth information about their students' college search, application process, standardized testing, College 101, and college visits. This event sets the tone for the college application cycle, and ensures that students remain at the center of the search with their families as important partners.
Athletics Recruitment
Athletics Recruitment: Gunston's College Guidance Directors welcome a panel of professional staff each spring including a college Director of Athletics and coaches from their athletic program who represent different teams that include both men’s and women’s programs, field sports and swimming, rowing, sailing, running/cross country and court sports. This program is a forum to discuss the athletic recruitment process with college coaches. Families learn what being a college athlete is like, how to incorporate athletic recruitment into the college search, and general dos & don'ts.
Mid-Shore Regional College Fair
The Mid-Shore Regional College Fair, hosted annually by The Gunston School at Chesapeake College, provides Gunston students and high school students from our 5-county area access to over 60 college admission representatives. We believe in the importance of bringing colleges and universities to the Eastern Shore to promote college access and equity in our community.
Financial Planning Evening
Financial Planning Evening: Each fall, The College Guidance Office is pleased to welcome guardians of juniors and seniors to our College Financial Planning Evening. In years past we have had respected professionals including Varo Duffins, Director of Financial Aid at Swarthmore College and Cailean Leith, Associate Director of Student Aid at Washington College come to Gunston to discuss the FAFSA, CSS Profile, and scholarships. We invite leaders in the industry to share their expertise and knowledge about this important topic each year.
Standardized Testing
Standardized Testing: College Guidance hosts and facilitates the PSAT on campus at Gunston each fall, providing a familiar and comfortable environment for our students to test in. We also provide direction and support for students and families who are seeking assistance with test prep for the SAT or ACT, having conducted extensive research on many different professional and reputable companies. We can offer suggestions about which companies our students have expressed the most confidence in as well as the most affordable options. Advanced Placement (AP) Exams are also hosted and facilitated on campus at Gunston by our College Guidance Team each spring. The team works closely with our AP Faculty and Assistant Head of School to provide appropriate preparation, testing accommodations, testing spaces, and experienced staff to support the process from beginning to end.
Scholarships & Financial Aid
The College Guidance Team has more than 40 years of experience combined working with students to provide resources, information, guidance and support to enable our students to successfully navigate the scholarship search and financial aid process. Much of this is accomplished through lesson plans developed for and delivered to our students in their College 101 classes. We also meet individually with students to assist them with the completion of scholarship applications, financial aid documents, and discuss questions and concerns that our families may have that apply to these very important pieces of the college application process. Additionally, we review and discuss final financial aid and scholarship packages with our students and families.
Regional & State College Fair Participation
Regional and State College Fair Participation: The Directors of College Guidance attend regional and state college fairs each year to maintain and grow their presence as representatives for the Gunston community and the image of Gunston. Our students and families are made aware of these fairs, and encouraged to attend as per their interests. Students are prepared for the experience through sessions in their College 101 classes.
When my daughter first graduated from Gunston, she walked onto a college campus and was able to organize herself without any stress and enjoy that first semester [and] she was comfortable advocating for herself, because Gunston had taught her how to be responsible for her work, as they have with all my kids, and to reach out to them and work with them if they need help.
