Land Acknowledgement
As many of us are descendants of settlers, immigrants, or descendants of those forcefully brought to this continent, we at CIIS recognize and remember that our University’s building on Mission Street in what is now called San Francisco occupies traditional, unceded Ramaytush Ohlone (rah-my-toosh oh-loh-nee) lands. May we continue to hold the Ramaytush Ohlone and all Indigenous communities in our hearts and never forget their painful history as we continue the work of liberation for all.
For those of you in the San Francisco Bay Area, we encourage you to make voluntary financial contributions to the
Yunakin Land Tax
and the
Shuumi Land Tax
. Read more from the
Association for
Ramaytush Ohlone
on the San Francisco Peninsula, and the
Sogorea Te’ Land Trust
in the East Bay.

For the website
native-land.ca
, we wanted to share its disclaimer and emphasize that it is a starting resource:
“Disclaimer: This map does not represent or intend to represent official or legal boundaries of any Indigenous nations. To learn about definitive boundaries, contact the nations in question. Also, this map is not perfect—it is a work in progress with tons of contributions from the community. Please
send us fixes
if you find errors.”
We encourage all community members visiting this page to engage in continued listening and learning, attend and volunteer at Indigenous community events (in-person or online), and be in supportive relationship with the Indigenous communities, organizations, and people around you.
This acknowledgement may be periodically updated to reflect additional resources, voices, and concerns.
