DISCOVER THE DIFFERENCE
Maximizing Participation without sacrificing excellence
Nurturing Scholar Athletes
Woodlawn supports and nurtures scholar athletes. We believe every child benefits from the life lessons learned in sports and the increased levels of health, wellness, physical fitness and emotional wellbeing that comes from participating in athletics. We field over a dozen, competitive “no-cut” teams for middle and upper school students in cross country, track & field, soccer, volleyball, basketball, swimming, tennis and golf. There are no fees for joining a team. Our alumni participate in NCAA sports in college and Woodlawn is uniquely able to support the special needs of exceptional athletes.
We do not recruit athletes and we do not offer athletic scholarships. Every student athlete meets the same academic admissions standards as all Woodlawn students and our coaches play no role in the admissions or tuition assistance process. As in our academic programs our athletes are expected to adhere to a strict code of ethical conduct and always display good sportsmanship.

Our TEAMS
The 2024-25 school year marks our 18th year of varsity interscholastic competition and our ninth year as a 1A member of the
North
Carolina Independent School Athletic Association (NCISAA)
. Our twelve varsity teams compete in the Southern Piedmont Athletic Association (SPAA). For four straight years (2015-2019), our varsity program was ranked in the top 5 among all 1A schools in North Carolina, based on our finish in the
Wells Fargo Cup
In our middle school program, we give students a chance to participate on 8 different interscholastic sports teams. The 2024-2025 school year marks our 22nd year of middle school athletics. 2018 was the first year in the Southern Piedmont Athletic Association (SPAA) for our middle school teams.

Don’t miss the opportunity to participate in our athletic programs. Playing sports is fun, healthy and rewarding. You’ll build skills, friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.
Middle school sports start at 6th grade but at the coaches’ discretion, 5th graders may be allowed to join a middle school team. Varsity sports start at 10th grade but at the coaches’ discretion, students as young as 7th grade may be allowed to join varsity teams.
With so many sports and teams it can be hard to choose. Our advice is to ask yourself a few questions and think about the answers. Explore our team pages, ask your friends and talk to the coaches.
Is there a sport that you love?
That’s great so join the team and select other sports for fun or conditioning. For example, maybe you love basketball, then join the Cross Country team in the fall to build endurance and speed and play Basketball in the winter. In the spring continue conditioning with Track & Field or have some fun with Golf or Tennis.
Is there a sport that you want to try?
Woodlawn’s program is no-cut, no-fees and everybody plays. If you’ve always wanted to learn golf then join the team. Or maybe you’d like to join the volleyball team! Consider adding Cross Country to get in shape in the fall. Would you like to give basketball in the winter.
Do you have specific goals?
Get it shape, build strength, speed or endurance? Think about which sports will further your goals. For example a great way to get in shape is to sign up for Cross Country in the fall or Track & Field in the spring.
Want to train for a triathlon?
How about Cross Country, Swimming and Track & Field!
How much time can you commit?
Don’t over do it. Playing multiple sports each season with a heavy course load of AP classes, a job or volunteering in the community can be overwhelming. Strive for balance! But if you do want to play two sports in a season consider combining Cross Country or Track & Field with Soccer or Volleyball.
