Aspen Historical Society (AHS) enriches the community through preserving and communicating its remarkable history. AHS operates four historical sites (Wheeler/Stallard Museum and Archives, Holden/Marolt Mining and Ranching Museum, Ashcroft Ghost Town, and Independence Ghost Town), and has started initial planning for the forthcoming Aspen Snowsports History Museum at Skiers Chalet, part of the Lift One base area redevelopment on Aspen Mountain. AHS provides free history education for regional schools and engages the public with guided tours, programs, and community events year-round. AHS maintains one of the largest public archives in the region, including free access to the online collection.

Seasonal Part-time Staff
This is a fun and unique opportunity to learn about and share Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley’s remarkable history while working at an established museum setting. Aspen Historical Society (AHS) seeks part-time summer (early June – end of September) staff to assist with site staffing, programming, education, and events.
Primary Responsibilities
Working as a docent at some or all of our 4 historical locations. These include the ghost town of
Independence
, located near the Continental Divide, on Independence Pass (elevation 10,800 ft.); the ghost town of
Ashcroft
, located in the Castle Creek Valley (elevation 9,521 ft.); the
Holden/Marolt Mining and Ranching Museum
, located in Aspen; and the
Wheeler/Stallard Museum,
home of Aspen Historical Society’s administrative offices and public Archives (less frequently needed).
Supporting/helping staff field trips to our sites.
Other Responsibilities
Supporting our signature community events (Hoedown, Ice Cream Social, Twilight Cemetery Tour).
Supporting educational programming for preschool and elementary aged children and their caregivers either on or off site.
Training Provided
All part-time staff will receive local history training and resources from AHS staff
Staff will be trained in interpretive guide principles as well as customer service skills
Part-time staff will also be trained in computer POS operation, daily accounting practices, and visitor attendance tracking.
Transportation
Part-time staff must provide their own transportation. The Roaring Fork Valley has a robust bus system, but a car is needed to get to certain sites.
Qualifications
Experience/interest in history, archaeology, theater, museum studies, communication or a related field is helpful, but not required. What is required is the desire to share our rich history with others!
Expectations of Part-Time Staff
All staff will assume professional responsibilities and complete tasks as assigned.
No use of tobacco, alcohol, or recreational drugs will be tolerated on the job.
Part-time staff will dress appropriately. Generally, this is very casual, however docent duties and certain tours and events may require a more professional appearance.
Attendance at all mandatory training.
All staff are important ambassadors representing Aspen Historical Society and this role will be proudly and enthusiastically accepted.
Scheduling and pay rate
Part-time staff are paid hourly ($17-$25/hour depending on experience) with hours per week capped at 30, although most schedules are for fewer hours. Pay periods fall on/around the 5th and 20th of each month.

The Education, Program and Office Administrator (EPOA) participates primarily as part of the Education and Programming Team and reports to the VP of Education and Programs. The financial portion of the position is overseen by the Facilities Manager, also part of the Education and Programming Team
. This position represents a reorganization of the department and provides an opportunity for restructuring or adjusting the position as needed.

Preferred Qualifications
Very strong organizational and communication skills
Knowledge of computer programs including Excel, Outlook, and Word
Willingness to learn new software (CRM software used by AHS to track donors, visits, and provide links to register for tours and programs)
Ability to handle money and deposits and become familiar with basic accounting and QuickBooks
Ease in interacting with visitors and constituents, including young children
Enthusiasm for history and museums
Spanish language skills (strongly preferred but not required)
Willingness to work some non-traditional hours for programs, special events, and museum hours
Experience with retail
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Education and Program Support
Track stats/data to quantify programming reach. Provide reports on data as needed (primarily for grants and marketing)
Track volunteer hours in CRM system
Assist VP with education and program scheduling and confirmations, working with different constituencies to calendar visits both on and off site
Oversee supplies for programs, ensuring all needed items are onsite and prepped
Assist VP and Marketing Director to ensure student take-home sheets are ready for upcoming school visits
Assist VP to ensure Outlook calendar reflects accurate scheduling of all education, programming and events
Create registration links for seasonal tours, programs and events schedule
Oversee costume inventory and maintenance including washing or pulling items for dry cleaning as needed
Assist with staffing at the Wheeler/Stallard as needed (providing coverage for vacations or illness)
Assist with answering phones
Assist with events when possible/needed. (May require some time on evenings or weekends)
Gift Shop
Oversee gift shop, with approval and input from Executive Team, including ordering, displaying, tracking inventory, meeting with other team members to come up with ways to improve this asset
Facility
Order office and cleaning supplies as needed or requested by other staff
Oversee stocking and distribution of first aid kits to all sites
Maintain AED device(s), performing all required checks
Oversee storage and organization of assets in the Wheeler/Stallard house including garage, boiler room and kitchen
Oversee, inventory and maintain intern equipment/camping gear as needed
Run and unload dishwasher as needed
Launder kitchen towels and tablecloths (after events) as needed
Update outgoing phone system messages as needed
Monitor stock and resupply station with printed materials as needed
Finance
Check/receive mail, open checks/donations, scan and enter them into CRM software
Retrieve daily cash drops, count and verify
Prepare deposit spreadsheets for all cash, check and online deposits and submit to bookkeepers (approx. 1 day/week during slower times, 2 days per week during summer season and summer/winter appeals)
Take all prepared cash/check deposits to the appropriate bank (including those from ghost towns during summer months)
Other
Assist Development Team with large mailings as needed (infrequent)
Compensation
This is a full-time salaried position that reports to Vice President, Education and Programs of Aspen Historical Society. Benefits include paid time off, health insurance, paid family leave, retirement plan, and educational opportunities such as professional development conferences. Some remote work may be possible depending on the season. The pay range is $55,000-$65,000 annually, depending on experience. AHS is an equal opportunity employer.
