National and regional bodies which accredit schools are themselves evaluated by international federations, and by US based commissions. SGU’s School of Medicine has been continuously accredited for decades, enabling our students to be eligible to practice in the US. SGU also has approvals and recognitions from the other US state bodies that are required to allow for clinical training FAQs Basics School of Veterinary Medicine Accreditation St. George’s University School of Veterinary Medicine (SGUSVM) is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education (AVMA COE). The SGUSVM Small Animal Clinic is accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). This clinic is one of only two animal clinics outside the US and Canada to gain AAHA accreditation. SGUSVM participates in the U.S. Department of Education Federal Direct Loan Program and eligible students can receive federal student loans for their studies at the School of Veterinary Medicine. Why is WFME approval important? The Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), the authorized credential evaluation and guidance agency for non-U.S. physicians and graduates of non-US medical schools who seek to practice in the United States or apply for a US medical residency program, announced that effective in 2024, physicians applying for ECFMG certification to participate in the NRMP will be required to graduate from a medical school that has been appropriately accredited. To satisfy this requirement, the physician’s medical school must be accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by WFME. The WFME Recognition Programme is the only program accepted by ECFMG at the current time for the recognition of medical school accrediting agencies.
