Campus safety officers actively patrol campus, prevent crime, provide safety escorts for students, respond to incidents and medical emergencies, provide safety education and awareness, and support community members and campus activities.
Campus safety officers monitor Curtis’ access control and security camera system. Entry to campus facilities is regulated by a zoned key card system, providing students, faculty, and staff with appropriate access to campus areas using their school ID cards. Visitors, contractors, and vendors must sign in at the security desk for approval and receive a temporary access card, as appropriate. The campus has over 60 cameras which are monitored by trained officers on campus posts.
Curtis’ campus safety officers are trained in CPR, AED (Automated External Defibrillator), basic first aid, de-escalation tactics, and management of aggressive behavior.
The campus safety department works with Curtis’ student life team to help educate students and resident assistants in personal safety, fire drills, city safety tips, and crisis intervention. Campus safety also works with the Philadelphia Police Department on active shooter education for the Curtis community.
Curtis uses the One Call Now emergency notification software to relay emergency messages to students, faculty, and staff in a timely manner, through automated text, phone, and email messages.
The director of campus safety continually coordinates with local police, city offices, and peer institutions to monitor and improve campus safety conditions. Personnel also receive refresher training as needed to ensure that they have the most current skills, knowledge, and techniques to assist the Curtis community.
In coordination with Curtis’ human resources department, the campus safety team helps track and complete reports of incidents, Clery Act, UCR (Uniform Crime Reporting), and Act 153.
The safety, security, and well-being of our students, faculty, staff, and visitors at the Curtis Institute of Music are of paramount importance.
