The Graham School is pleased to offer an opportunity for students to explore James Joyce’s Dublin accompanied by scholars from The James Joyce Center and Graham School instructor, Kendall Sharp. Prior study of Joyces work is not required. All Graham students and alumni are eligible to apply to join us on this immersive Joyce experience. Partners are cordially welcome.

Our itinerary, crafted along with scholars from The James Joyce Centre, brings to life Joyce’s major works, especially
Ulysses
but also
Dubliners
and
A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
. Our local partners will guide us as we walk Dublin’s streets, visiting the bars, beaches, and pharmacies featured in Joyce’s texts, as well as dive into Ireland’s rich literary history more generally. Engage in Graham-style discussions led by trip scholar Kendall Sharp and experience the books in a new light. We will cap our excursion with a day trip to the Boyne Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to examine Ireland’s rich Gaelic past.

Today we arrive in Dublin, Ireland and check into our hotel, Dublin One Hotel, at leisure.

: Sandycove and Dublin
We explore Dublin in the time of James Joyce with a bus tour of the city, followed by the first of many discussion sessions at the James Joyce Center. In the afternoon we set out to explore the bustling Northside of Dublin on a walking tour of real-life locations to passages in not just

James Joyce Walking Tour of Dublin and Museum of Literature
This morning, we join our partners from the James Joyce Center to set out exploring South Dublin and the very site where

begins: Martello Tower and Sandymount Strand. Transfer by private coach.

The Quay Tour and Phoenix Park
We take the Quay Tour, as our Joyce Centre guides show us key locations from
Ulysses
, including O’Connell Bridge, Ormond Quay, and the Cabman’s Shelter. We will visit Trinity College and the Book of Kells.

September 17, Thursday
: Lestrygonians Tour, the Book of Kells, and the National Library
We track the steps of Bloom as he pursues lunch in the “Lestrygonians” episode of
Ulysses
. With our Joyce Centre guides, we will follow Bloom from Middle Abbey Street to the National Library, visiting Davy Byrne’s along the way and followed by Sweney’s Pharmacy, where Bloom buys lemon soap.

: Boyne Valley excursion
We travel out of Dublin by coach for daylong excursion to the countryside of the Boyne Valley and the prehistoric sites of Bru na Boinne, Newgrange and Knowth.

: Dublin and Howth
Our tour ends where
Ulysses
ends, the Hill of Howth. The day begins with a visit to Glasnevin Cemetery, the setting for the “Hades” episode. Our farewell dinner commemorates the closing words of

, where Molly takes us in memory to the Hill of Howth.

Who is eligible to attend James Joyce’s Dublin?
James Joyce’s Dublin is open to all Graham students and alumni, and anyone interested in Graham coursework. While this tour was created to complement our classes on James Joyce’s
Ulysses
, Joyce classes or prior readings of the novel are not a prerequisite.
What are the prerequisites to participate in James Joyce’s Dublin?
While previous readings of James Joyce’s major works will enhance your experience, no prior reading is required. Students who register will be assigned readings for the tour discussions. The discussions will be structured so that students who have not read
Ulysses
can gain an entry to the text while in Dublin.
How much does James Joyce’s Dublin cost?
$6,995 per person in a double room
$7,495 per person in a single room
(international airfare is not included)
A nonrefundable deposit of $1,200 is required to register.
Final payments are due by May 30, 2026
What is included in the cost for James Joyce’s Dublin?
Pre-trip seminar.
Pre-trip reception.
7 night’s accommodations in the Castle Hotel in central Dublin including breakfast.
Daily breakfast and most lunches, arrival-day reception, welcome and farewell dinners.
Expert-led walking tours and museum tours coordinated with the James Joyce Center in Dublin.
Discussion sessions led by a Basic Program instructor.
Entry to all sites and museums on the itinerary.
Coach transportation to sites outside of Dublin.

Participants are responsible for their own air travel to Dublin (and airport transfers) and meals other than those listed in the itinerary.

Yes. These will be shared prior to the trip. The tour will focus on

Will we have discussion sessions during the trip?
Yes. The Basic Program trip scholar will lead one virtual seminar prior to the trip and several sessions during the trip. Topics and readings will be announced in advance.
How much walking is involved?
Participants should be aware that the trip requires significant walking around Dublin. Many of the itinerary dates are extensive walking tours crafted by the James Joyce Centre. Ability to climb 2-3 flights of stairs and ability to stand for up to 90 minutes is required.
What is the cancellation policy if my availability to attend the trip changes?
All cancellations and requests for refunds must be submitted in writing. All cancellations will be subject to a $600 per person fee. Cancellations received between March 30 and May 30, 2026 will result in a $1,000 per person cancelation fee. From May 31 to July 30, 2026, cancelations will result in a $5,000 per person fee. No refunds will be giving for cancellations received after July 31, 2026.
Is travel insurance required?
We strongly suggest that participants purchase travel insurance to protect against nonrefundable costs incurred when travel must be postponed on short notice. We are unable to make exceptions to our refund policies.
Participants may elect instead to waive this requirement understanding fully that the University of Chicago Alumni Association and Graham School of Continuing Liberal and Professional Studies are under no obligation to provide a refund after cancellation dates have passed.
Are there any special considerations for medical insurance?
Medical insurance plans vary. Participants should confirm that their medical insurance covers expenses while abroad or arrange for alternative medical insurance.
What responsibilities should I be aware of?
The University of Chicago, the University of Chicago Graham School of Continuing Liberal and Professional Studies, the James Joyce Centre, and Capela Ltd. have no responsibility in whole or in part for any loss, death, damage, or injury to person or property or accident, mechanical defect, failure or negligence of any nature howsoever caused in connection with any accommodation, transportation, or other services. Baggage is at the owner’s risk entirely. The right is retained to decline to accept or retain any person as a trip member should such person’s health, mental condition, physical infirmity, or attitude jeopardize the operation of the trip or the rights, welfare, or enjoyment of other participants.
