The Music Library service desk is on the 2nd Floor of the Main Library, adjacent to the New Media Center service desk. Music materials circulate from the Music Desk. Music books and most music scores that are put on course reserve are housed at the 1st Floor (Main Library) Circulation Desk,
not
in the Music Library, which is because the 1st Floor Circulation Desk is open weekday evenings and weekends, when the Music Library is closed.
When the Music Library is closed, books only
(i.e., not scores)
may be retrieved from the Music stacks and taken to the 1st floor Circulation Desk.
The Music Library is named in honor of Professor Walter W. Gerboth, who was a professor of music at Brooklyn College (1958-1986) and also the President of the Music Library Association (1969-1970). It was his vision to create a separate music library within the Brooklyn College main library.
The many collections and formats of materials within the Music Library not only support the curriculum of the Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music but also provide one of the best special collections in this greatest of musical cities for anyone in the City University community interested in any aspect of music and dance.
Whether you are a non-music major who has to write a "concert report" or do a group presentation on a music topic or you are a graduate music student writing an extensive research paper, this guide to resources can help you get started.
The Music Librarian, Professor Raphael, welcomes communications from anyone needing assistance with Music Library services and collections, including help with research. It is best to set up an appointment either by email at
HonoraR@brooklyn.cuny.edu
or by phone at (718) 951-5844.
