There's always something to do at Michigan Tech. Because Houghton is far away from
just about everywhere, we're not a "suitcase school"—students are around on the weekends
and there are tons of opportunities to enjoy your college experience. When you're
not busy in class, you'll find tons of ways to get involved on campus.
Student Organizations
Join any of the more than 260 student organizations and participate, laugh, and lead—around
Michigan Tech and in the community. Whatever you're into, there's likely to be a group
you'll find a home with.

Have an interest we don't have a club or org for? No problem! Start one of your own.
You can even apply for University funding to help with your initiatives. All you need
is a new idea, 10 founding members, an advisor, and a constitution. Our Student Leadership
and Involvement staff can help you with the rest.
Music and Fine Arts
More than 600 students participate in
music and fine arts
on campus. These Tech students have a love for the arts and want to make it a part
of their lives. Play, sing, perform, create!
Visual and Performing Arts Talent Award scholarships
are available for students who plan to be actively involved in
the Arts
during their time on campus.
Fraternity and Sorority Life
Fraternity and sorority life at Michigan Tech is a tradition—and a great way to make
friends for life. Join one of seven sororities or 11 fraternities and achieve your
potential through scholarship, leadership, service, and community. About 11 percent
of students on campus have gone Greek—completing more than 12,000 service hours and
raising over $33,900 for local and national philanthropies in 2025.
Outdoor Adventure
Michigan Tech owns and operates
Mont Ripley
, our very own ski and snowboard hill, and
Portage Lake Golf Course
; both are minutes from campus. Our world-class Tech Trails offer opportunities for
hiking, mountain biking, Nordic skiing, snow biking, and snowshoeing. Michigan Tech
is on the shores of the Keweenaw Waterway with Lake Superior just minutes away. Our
Outdoor Adventure Program
offers guided excursions, workshops, equipment rentals, and clinics.

Intramural Sports
Participate in individual and team intramural sports throughout the year. Sports include
basketball, water polo, softball, pickleball, ultimate Frisbee, disc golf, volleyball,
frisbocky, and walleyball—volleyball in a racquetball court—floor hockey, dodgeball,
soccer, table tennis, billiards tournament, a swim meet, and more. Thanks to the
Experience Tech
initiative, you'll have unlimited free access to intramural sports.
